I know what you are thinking (some parents, anyway), "Not another something to do!" Well, we have a MUSIC EXAM!!!, and I can't wait. Everyone does know, right? Last Thursday, the Concert Choirs of Cordova Middle School attended the All West Tennessee Junior High Choral Music Festival at Colonial Middle School. This is a competitive setting, where judges evaluate our performances on songs we sing. Choirs from all over West Tennessee attended in hopes of receiving high scores for their performances. The lowest scoring choirs receive "V'"s (5's - "poor") and the highest achieving choirs earn II's ("2's" - "excellent") and I's ("1's" - "superior"). Cordova Choirs were incredible with all three choirs earning top honors: "I’s" ("superiors"). I cannot recall ever having had all three choirs earn SUPERIORS at the same event, but our choirs did this, this year, and so, parents you should be proud of what has been accomplished by your children.
Now parents, I know you are excited about your child’s singing and would like to hear them perform so I am obliging. Thursday evening, May 14, the Strings, the Bands, and the Concert Choirs will all perform, and you will have a chance to hear them all. The concert begins at 6:30 p.m. Students must arrive and be ready to perform 30 minutes prior to their “on stage” performance time. Students are asked to remain in attendance with their parents for 30 minutes after performing, as a courtesy to other performing groups. Actually, it would be nice if everyone who comes attends the entire evening so there is a good audience throughout the night. Students and parents should only enter the auditorium between performances as groups move on and off the stage.
Since this is an exam grade, students who miss will be given an actual make-up exam provided they have an “excused” absence prior to the concert. It is the responsibility of every student to be present so the choir may give the best possible performance – examples of excused absences: extremely ill with fever, car wreck, in jail – examples of unexcused absences: cannot find a ride, went to bed early, cannot miss a favorite TV show, out-of-town company….if it is your birthday, we will sing to you, but still come…Unexcused absences will result in an “F” exam grade.
Uniforms for all choir students are formal dress attire – the same as for the Choir Festival Competition Field Trip. Thank you for your planned participation. Remember, when it comes to great performances and getting the job done everyone seriously depends on everyone.
